A small city with a base in the middle

Los Alamitos counted 11,780 residents at the 2020 Census on 4.07 square miles, with a median age of 39.3, which makes it the youngest community on our route by a wide margin. A significant part of the city is occupied by the Joint Forces Training Base, the former Los Alamitos Naval Air Station, now used mostly by the National Guard. The residential city wraps around it, bordered by Cypress to the north and east, West Garden Grove to the east, and Seal Beach to the south, with Rossmoor’s walled subdivision surrounding portions of it. Subdivisions include Carrier Row, Alamos Ranchos, Plainview Homes, and Los Alamitos Park.

The golf connection is real and a little odd. The Navy Golf Course at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, open to the public since 2006, is a 27-hole facility that spans four municipalities: the clubhouse is in Cypress, the driving range in Garden Grove, the ninth hole of the William Bell-designed Destroyer eighteen is in Seal Beach, and the nine-hole Cruiser course is in Los Alamitos. The base borders the course’s north side. Old Ranch Country Club, the Ted Robinson par-72 on Lampson Avenue in Seal Beach, is just across the city line. Carts in Los Alamitos tend to be golfers’ carts and family runabouts rather than daily transportation, which changes the wear pattern: fewer cycles, more sitting.

What Los Alamitos carts need

Recovery from sitting. A cart that goes out for golf on the weekend and sits in the garage otherwise is the classic Los Alamitos cart, and lead-acid packs hate sitting at partial charge. Trojan’s guidance is that batteries should be fully charged before and during storage and never stored discharged. Corrosion, on a slower clock. Los Alamitos is a few miles inland from the surf, so it gets less salt than Sunset Beach or the Harbour, but the marine layer still rolls in overnight most summer mornings and burns off by afternoon. Garaged carts here do better than the parking-pad carts in Leisure World. Carts under a carport still grow green terminals, and a yearly tune-up with a terminal and cable service at $125 to $225 keeps a corroded lug from masquerading as a dead pack.

Chargers and ports. The weekend cart’s charger runs unattended for days, and a charger that quietly fails is not noticed until the cart is dead. Charger repairs run $125 to $325, replacement $350 to $850; the charger repair page explains how we test output at the plug before anyone buys batteries.

Batteries. Mild temperatures, with August highs averaging about 83 degrees at Long Beach Airport, favor long pack life, and a lightly used Los Alamitos cart on a good charger can reach six years on lead-acid. Lead-acid packs run $1,300 to $1,900 installed; for a cart that goes out twice a week, lead-acid usually beats lithium on the math, and the battery replacement page says so plainly.

The rules in Los Alamitos

A golf cart under Vehicle Code 345 may use a public street only where the city has designated that street for combined use under Vehicle Code 21115, within a mile of a golf course. We found no such designation in Los Alamitos and do not claim one, so a true golf cart here stays on private property unless the city says otherwise. A registered low-speed vehicle under Vehicle Code 385.5 may use roads posted 35 mph or less with a licensed, insured driver. Confirm the current rules with the city.
